Mercy Over Might
“And thus without meeting any resistance…” the Lamanites “…did forbear from slaying them…” ~ Alma 24: 22-24
This life-size sculpture will stand as a powerful illustration of the determination of those who refuse to break their solemn oath to God, even at the price of their own lives.
As told in The Book of Mormon, the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi (later called Ammonites) buried their weapons in the earth as a witness to God that they would never shed the blood of man. Attacked by the Lamanites, the Ammonites prostrated themselves before their oncoming enemies and would rather die than pick up a sword to defend themselves.
Then their attackers, seeing the defenseless attitude of their victims, were “stung for the murders they had (already) committed” and threw down their own swords, and their “hearts had swollen in them for those of their brethren who had fallen under the sword, for they repented of things which they had done.”
